
UPDATE County Board of Legislators honors PHS Girls State Championship team
On Monday March 28, as part of the Annual Women’s History Month Celebration, the Westchester County Board of Legislators honored the Peekskill High School Girls Basketball Team for winning the NY State Class A Championship.
The team had a record setting season by going 24-1 while maintaining a 22 game winning streak through the championship game on March 19 by defeating Averill Park. The team not only won the first ever state championship for any girls sport in PHS history but also won the first ever Regional Championship of any girls team.
“It was an honor to be able to invite them to attend the BOL ceremony and to present each member of the team and coaching staff with a certificate of appreciation and to present coach, Rodney Headly, Jr. with a proclamation declaring the day ‘Peekskill High School Girls Basketball Day’ throughout Westchester County,” Westchester County Legislator John Testa.
In addition to the county recognition for their championship season, the Lady Red Devils were cheered at a PHS a pep rally on Friday, April 1 and a parade sponsored by the city in downtown Peekskill on Saturday, April 2.
The team will also be honored at the next Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m.
During the regular season, junior Asia Jackson scored over 1,000 career points, and senior Jazmin Garcia accomplished the same feat during the Federation game. Asia Jackson, Jazmin Garcia, and Tasia Nolan were named to the Federation All-Tournament Team.

Players: Sheridan Taylor, Tasia Nolan, Kiana Letsinger, Jazmin Garcia, Asia Jackson, Dottie Bradshaw, Tanisha Crew, Shaina Iton, Shonae Draper, Aubrey Dabbs, Latisha Clark, Troi Nolan, Samantha Jackson, Adriane Jackson and Morgan Beechum.
Coaches: Rodney Headley Jr., Rodney Headley Sr., James Smith, Kim Saxton, Sidney Taylor (scorekeeper), and Porky Male (manager).
The Lady Red Devils ended their dream championship season with a hard-fought defeat in the Federation Class A championship on Saturday, March 26 in Albany, but remain as the greatest team in Peekskill girls basketball history.
Peekskill lost 53-48 to Archbishop Molloy in the Federation game. The Lady Red Devils are the 2010-11 Section 1 Champions, State Class A champions and winners of the County Slam Dunk tournament.
The PHS Girl’s basketball team won their first-ever state championship on Saturday, March 19, cruising to an easy 58-35 victory in the Class A final over defending champs Averill Park at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
Junior Guard Asia Jackson, the final four MVP in the state tournament, led the way to the tournament victory. In the championship game, seniors Sheridan Taylor (20), Jazmin Garcia (17) and Tasia Nolan (14) were the high scorers for Peekskill.
Coach Rodney Headley Jr. has piloted the Red Devils to their 24-1 record this season, which includes the current 22-game winning streak.
Peekskill won a bye into the Federation tournament championship game on March 26 at 12:15 p.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany against CHSAA champ Archbishop Molloy, the winner of Friday’s semi-final game against the PSAL champion.
